Kalikesam falls

The Kalikesam Falls were discovered by an enthusiastic trekker, exploring the rainforests of the area. One can take a dip in the pond created by the Kalikesam Falls below. However, the winter months are considered ideal to visit these falls, as the animal frequency is restricted to night time. The Kalikesam Falls remain perennial even in the dry months of summer season. A cave located near the Kalikesam Falls, known as ‘Bottani Cave’ is used by the tourists for cooking. It is advisable not to stay at the falls after sunset, as the wild animals arrive at the area to quench their thirst.
The Kalikesam Falls are located in the Kanyakumari district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kalikesam falls along with several other small cascades are encased in the Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary. The area around the falls is surrounded by forests and rubber plantation. A religious place known as Kali Amman Temple is located near these falls. This temple has many local devotees, who perform puja, significantly on Tuesdays and Fridays, of the week. The temple is located on a river shore, which adds to its divinity. Heavy offerings by women are made to the deity of the temple, in the Tamil month of Aadi. The stream that flows at the end of the falls is believed to have healing powers, to cure maladies.
Tamil is the official language of the state and most of the locals speak only in Tamil, in case one may need directions to reach the Kalikesam Falls. The closest inhabited city to the falls is Nagercovil, at a distance of 35 kilometers. The nearest airport to the Kalikesam Falls is Madurai and closest railway stations are Kanyakumari and Nagercovil. The access to the Kalikesam Falls is only through a private vehicle, as there is no public transportation facility available. The Kalikesam Falls are located in one of the remote areas of Kanyakumari and it is comparatively undiscovered and undeveloped to the other natural attractions of the state. Due to its discreet location, it is a home to several illegal and malpractices.
